Azores, Portugal

ribeirolalaJust less than 1000 miles to the west of Portugal are nine volcanic islands, located in the central Atlantic Ocean. The most interesting thing about the archipelago is that the islands were once uninhabited due to their remote nature. They were settled into over the span of 200 years, giving the people's culture, language, tradition, and food variance. The great thing about Azores is that it's cheap and close - take a flight out of Boston (NY will cost you four times as much) for around $300 for the four hour flight. Make sure to visit Furnas, known for its hot springs. The village rests on the edge of a lake inside the rim of a volcano which last erupted in 1630. Sample different fountains housing water from various springs in the region, each with its own taste. [Photo via]
