Swedish Midsummer

Midsummer, Sweden
Name and Location: Midsummer, celebrated throughout Sweden Date: June 24, 2012 Details: To celebrate the warm weather and the longest day of the year, Swedes participate in this quintessentially Swedish celebration every June. The party involves the raising of and dancing around a maypole, which is covered in greens and flowers. After the maypole tradition is out of the way, party-goers continue celebrating by eating fish and drinking beer until the sun goes down around midnight. By the time the sun sets, most people have been drinking all day, but there's one Midsummer tradition that no Swedish girl would ever forget: legend has it that on your way home from the celebration, girls and young women must pick 7 different kinds of flowers, put them under their pillow that night, and their future husband will appear in their dreams.
