La Tomatina

La Tomatina, Spain
Name and Location: La Tomatina, Bunol, Spain Date: August 29, 2012 Details: Held in the town of Bunol, Spain, La Tomatina has been held on the last Wednesday in August since 1957. The entire purpose of the festival is to throw tomatoes at each other, and the tomato fight only lasts one hour, with both the beginning and the end of the fight marked by a gunshot. Approximately 150,000 tomatoes are used during the fight (might this be the world's largest food fight?), and after the fight fire-trucks spray down the streets to wash the tomato juice away. The festival is chaotic, but it got some much needed order in 1975 when the official rules were created: 1. The tomatoes have to be squashed before throwing to avoid injuries. 2. No other projectiles except tomatoes are allowed. 3. Participants have to give way to the truck and lorries. 4. The festival doesn't allow ripping off T-shirts. 5. After the second shot indicative of ending the tomato hurl, no tomatoes should be thrown. [Photo via]
