Cascais is in close proximity to Sintra, one of the most culturally rich cities in Europe, dotted with architecturally stunning castles. Start by checking out Quinta da Regaleira - a palace and a chapel within a labyrinth-like park full of hidden grottoes, wells and fountains. From here, you can see the haunting Castelo dos Mouros (Moors’ Castle), which was built in the 9th century. Finally, check out the Royal Palace of Sintra (also known as the Town Palace), which dates back to the Islamic domination of the town in the middle ages. This was the residence of Moorish rulers from back in the day. The great thing about the Town Palace is that it is smack in the middle of downtown Sintra, next to several cute cafes that you can end your day at. The town of Sintra has a Wuthering Heights vibe about it, and it is definitely worth reserving a whole day for exploration and discovery. Quinta da Regaleira [Photo via]
