Daily Style Phile: Abel Tesfaye, The Weeknd We All Look Forward To

1 of 5

Little Bit Of Background

- Tesfaye is from the great white north, growing up in Toronto, Ontario to Ethiopian parents.

- Prior to becoming The Weeknd, Tesfaye was part of the songwriting/production group The Noise circa 2009.

- He gets his inspiration from genres across the board, taking cues from Michael Jackson, Siouxsie & The Banshees, indie-pop duo Beach House, and October's Very Own, Drizzy Drake.

- Abel released his first single What You Need as The Weeknd in late 2010.  Pitchfork soon picked up the track, assuming the artist behind the distant, ambient R&B sound was in fact a duo.  What You Need was given rave reviews.
