A weak pass at a proper hurricane name, but then again, it was only a category 3. Hitting Cape Hatteras, NC, as a category 4 on September 14th in 1944, this guy lost some power and struck Long Island as a category 3 later that night. Damages on Long Island totaled $1 million with about 20 ft of the beach eroding, causing some houses to wash out with the sea. [Photo via]
