There truly is a lot of dimensions to your music. I heard there was an owl recorded into one of your tracks in addition to other background sounds. Your recording process seems to be very raw. Why do you choose to do it this way?

We tend to like raw sound quality because it’s got some kind of essence to it. You know, some kind of juju that hasn’t been completely polished out by auto-tune. I feel like a lot of people sell themselves short with over producing shit. Some of the best stuff is recorded with like, a field mic. We were listening to the new Kendrick Lamar/Kayne/Madlib track today and it’s funny ‘cause knowing Madlib’s approach as a producer – he made the beat – it’s like, super crusty sounds and super awesome! Then Kayne and Kendrick’s verses, the way that they’ve recorded them is really clean so it sits really weird. It’s almost like the vocals sits on top of the track. I think it’s cool to get that juxtaposition and that dynamic but you really have to layer it up. Today was a really good example of how you could have the best people collaborating but whether they’re actually collaborating sound texture wise is a whole other thing. We like to explore the whole spectrum so we leave lots of raw shit in but then, Pez might record over every kick on a song just to make it sound more subby – there’s a lot of work that goes into it.
