UCLA Jazz Reggae Festival
The only thing strange about UCLA's annual two-day outdoor music festival is how criminally underlooked it tends to be. Maybe it's the name (UCLA long ago changed the "Jazz Day" to a more inclusive-sounding "Jam Day"), which tends to suggest some old trumpet players you've never heard of, instead of the reality which is that Nas, Damien Marley, Bilal, Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Steel Pulse, Barrington Levy, Q-Tip and Little Dragon have played the fest in the last two years alone. Maybe it's the fact that it's at UCLA, which despite sporting an undergrad population approaching 30,000 seems to have a rep for having a very limited on-campus social life. But whatever it is, you should ignore it, because this event is cheap ($25 tickets if you buy in advance), stacked and extremely fun. How stacked? Well this year, The Roots are headlining Jam Day (Sunday), while Shaggy, Collie Buddz and Tarrus Riley round out Reggae Day. You really can't go wrong. [Details]
