Dragonforce at The Troubadour
If anyone's ever tried to drag you to a Phish concert with the justification that "you don't have to be into the scene but they're really good musicians," counter-propose that Phish is awful, and also that they really ought to be talking about Dragonforce, the laser-fast UK speed metal band that many non-metalheads know primarily from having the absolute most impossible songs on Guitar Hero, Rock Band, or other "mash colorful buttons in lieu of actually learning how to play music" videogames. Simply put, I'm far from a heavy metal scenester or insider, but if you're truly looking for amazing instrumental proficiency (and perhaps a slightly more recently bathed crowd than a Phish show, though I wouldn't necessarily want to bet a lot of money on it), Dragonforce are your lads, dropping breakneck drumbeats and face melting guitar solos (and wonderfully preposterous heavy metal-style fantasy lyrics)  that will be 100x more impressive in the intimacy of Doug Weston's Troubadour.
