Llyn Foulkes at the New Museum
Nearly 100 of the diverse and brilliantly-disturbing pieces which make up Llyn Foulkes's body of work were on display at the New Museum starting in June. The retrospective of the artist's 50 year career came to New York from the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the city where Foulkes has lived and worked for most of his life.
Coming of age during World War II, the artist's disillusionment with—and even distrust of—the American government can be seen in his scathing distortions of pop culture and his violent collages of found materials, which beg the viewer to not only take a second glance at the piece in front of them, but at their society as a whole.
