Joan Smalls

Rae Morris on Makeup: I love purple lips, but they don’t suit many skin tones. They are most suitable for pale skin or dark skin, rarely in-between, and are best worn at night. The great thing about purple lips is that they make your teeth look whiter, however you have to be prepared to pull back on the eye shades. Joan Smalls has done that to perfection; her eyes are smokey and simple, nothing bright or colorful. Plus, she is wearing the perfect dress shade (it is cool-toned, similar to the lip shade. If that dress was orange, that lip would not work at all). My advice is if this is the shade you want to wear, pull everything else back. Wear it with a simple '60s winged eyeliner or without eye shadow but lots of lashes. Another great tip would be using matte, this will make it look more modern. Something to be cautious of when applying these lip shades, though, is to ensure your foundation is flawless as these lipsticks have a tendency to bring out any skin imperfections. Dennis Trotta on Hair: Make a low, side pony and start fishtailing. Split the pony in half and start taking very small pieces from the outside, crisscrossing them to create the fishtail braid. When you get to the bottom of the braid, cinch it with a rubber band and cut the rubber band where you made the pony originally and there you have it. Just rough up the braid a little for a rustic look.
