Mara is the founder of Faces of Kibera, a charity that helps provide housing, food, and medical care for orphans in Kibera, Kenya. The charity auctions Steelers and Giants memorabilia, as well as hold training camp events on eBay to raise money to support this cause.
After visiting the area in 2006, Mara was so moved by what she saw, she decided to help the many children who had been orphaned by parents who died from AIDS.
Rooney told Interview magazine in 2009,
"The people who need help aren’t really getting it. So I started my own (charity)."
