Top Crops - Shopping the Season

Union Square MarketSpring and fall, the greens are incredible. If you're a green freak, if you love kale, you're hoping for sunny but cool weather with just enough rain. Cooler weather makes a sweeter green. In a couple months, there will be tomatoes and peppers everywhere. So there's always things to look forward to. From Right now to June 30th, it's asparagus, peas, snap peas, fiddle heads, ramps. During peak season, you're not going to find much wrong. Everything in the market's fresh. But still, for asparagus, feel the tips for any sand or dirt. You'll want them clean. Look for tops that are purple, dry, and tight, and ends that have the least white on the stalk. Pretty much after July 4th is when everything goes crazy. Blueberries, peaches, nectarines. Strawberries are June. Our best selling dishes are the seasonal, unique salads - where we take an ingredient and just celebrate what's beautiful about it. Like our sugar snap pea salad, which comes out when snap peas have their moment right at the end of May. [Photo via Bea Helman]
