You both came up with the idea to collaborate after reuniting and having a catch-up session, but how did you develop the actual concept of an e-commerce site or a platform such as Zady? Maxine Bédat: Well, as you said, we got together talking about The Bootstrap Project, and we spent our days kind of talking about how a beautiful product is made and learning about the artisans and learning about their traditions. We gained such an appreciation for every object that we had because of that experience. And then when we turned to the rest of the items in our closets, it was like, ‘Why don’t I get that same story? Why don’t I know where that thing comes from?’ And it was at that same time that we really started to dig into, and read, and learn about things like supply chain and the problems that the ‘fast fashion’ industry has paved the way for. So it wasn’t really one ‘Aha!’ moment. I think we just realized there was something bigger than just us here, that there’s a company to be made that could really respond to the conscious consumer—which we were becoming as a part of this process.
