The Stonewall Riots
The tradition of the Pride Parade started in 1970 as "Christopher Street Liberation Day" to commemorate the Stonewall riots. The Stonewall riots took place on the early morning of June 26,1969 at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. The riots took place over two days and are cited as "the first instance in American history when people in the homosexual community fought back against a government-sponsored system that persecuted sexual minorities". They have also become the defining moment that sparked the Gay Rights Movement.
