Interview: Fashion Designer Cody Ross on NYFW

How has your label, PRIESTESS NYC, evolved since it launched a few years back? It went from being a kitschy mash of looks and ranges to a more nuanced and mature fashion proposition. I’d say it’s still evolving, but has come to occupy a niche bracket as a unisex and directional brand with artistic underpinnings. You’ve been targeting Asia, and specifically China as a growth space. What are your thoughts on China’s prospects for avant-garde fashion and art? China is so complicated and random, and everyday there’s some new form of upheaval. But it is a juicy place with so many amazing talents like Ai Wei Wei, Chen Man, Xiao Wen Ju and Liu Xiaobo. PRIESTESS NYC is quite active in the China market (with stores like Ad Hoc and D-mop), and I’m really inspired by the changes taking place on the ground. There’s a robust underground art scene there that is mind-bending and even starting to effect change from within. [Photo via]
