How does pilates play into the needs of modern women, who approach fitness with different goals now?

Heather AndersenHA: I think that pilates is very popular with women, because it doesn't create a large bulk of muscle; it's all about the strength. So your muscles get very taught and strong without being large. So that's obviously really attractive to women. I think people are much more interested in strength now, versus size. HA: Right, without the volume. So part of that is the spring resistance, and it's not like super heavy resistance, it's more about stabilizing your joints. When men are interested in pilates, it's typically because they are over 35, have had a disc injury, and a doctor or chiropractor or physical therapist told them to go. That's usually when and how men start doing pilates, and that's because it's incredibly efficient at strengthening your abdominals and low back.
