Joanne is Adam Driver's fiancée, and they founded Arts in the Armed forces together. Adam was actually a marine, he was in my battalion. We didn't know each other, but a good buddy of mine was his platoon commander. He's probably the only marine to go onto Juilliard. Adam and Joanne have created this program to sort of provide real art that challenges people's thinking. One of the things that's so amazing about this performance is that you have an audience of the military that most people would think would not be connected to a Greek tragedy, and yet they understand it and get it in a way that most Classical historians can't, because they've lived it. It's been their experience. If you're a military spouse, you know what it's like to have a husband come back from war dragging the bodies and the ghosts with him. If you are a warrior who has lost a friend in combat, you understand Ajax's grief. It's not just literature, you've lived it, and it speaks to you across thousands of years.
