Then it was Uptown to the 59th Viennese Opera Ball. The night before, we chatted with a native New Yorker at The Lambs Club about how, when he was younger, Uptown was Uptown and Downtown was Downtown and you knew what you were getting when you went somewhere. "Nowadays," he said, "everything is everywhere and you don't know what you'll find when you walk into a room."
We where eager to take a peek behind the gilded curtain at New York society, and see for ourselves if Uptown could still be Uptown, even if its slow creep into Downtown has forced Downtown across the water to Brooklyn.
