City Harvest

City HarvestCity Harvest is a nonprofit that operates via food rescue, education and distribution. Founded in 1982, City Harvest has rescued more than 465 million pounds of food, which boils down to about 136,000 pounds every day. City Harvest was the first organization of its kind in the world and is still the only existing food distribution organization in New York City. It operates by collecting extra food from groceries, bakeries, corporate cafeterias, farms and factories, and roughly 60% of what’s collected is expected to be fresh produce in 2015. There are many ways to get involved, ranging from mobile distribution markets, helping repack food that’s been collected, nutrition education and office assistants.
