Don't aim to impress, aim to be interesting
If you have an interesting anecdote with a beginning, middle, and end, do tell. But if you're desperate to impress, people will get grossed out. People are going to hang on to every word to a story you tell about the time you got a secret piercing on St. Marks because your girlfriends dared you to, but they're going to want to hang themselves if you're all too eager to tell them about the time a VP from UBS told you that you have nice hair.
