The Blockhouse

The Blockhouse
This aged fortification—the oldest structure in the Park, in fact—was built during the War of 1812 to protect New York against a British attack. Notice the unevenness of the stonework, which attests to the rush to construct the fort after a sudden, unexpected attack from British troops from the North (they were expected to come from the South). Nestled in the midst of a heavily forested area, the Blockhouse is a great destination for a hike through the north end of the Park. West Side at 109th Street and Central Park West [Photo via]
