Just as the rock n' roll T was Kurt Cobain's signature bottom layer, the utility jacket was the signature top layer. Its name describes exactly what is was designed for. It was a "manly man's" jacket, built for work and function. In Kurt Cobain's case, it was built for his on-stage antics and guitar playing.
