Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen, and District 12
The costume designer of The Hunger Games is Judianna Makovsky, of Harry Potter fame. Her challenge was to create costumes for two distinct cultures in this fictional world of Panem: the excessive consumption of the Capitol city-dwellers, and the poverty of the workers living in the rural Districts. For the poor workers, Makovsky drew inspiration from the photography of Lewis Hine, whose work captured the poverty of the working class in early 20th-century America. In these stills, the film's main character, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), wears a faded blue dress, drawn right from the pages of American history.  Its simplicity contrasts the elaborate, fuchsia ensemble of Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), an ambassador from the Capitol city.
