We unexpectedly ran into this delightful, folky singer last night as he played an acoustic set in the indoor bar area of a refreshingly low-key Surf Lodge. We were very quickly smitten: the man's adorable. Dreamy, even. He sings, he surfs, he plays guitar. He's from California. And he's SINGLE. Ladies, meet Dustin Franks.
A California-import currently living in Montauk, he's pretty much exactly how you'd expect him to be: a scruffy, t-shirt and jeans kind of a guy and a welcome opposite to our fast-talking, Manhattanite selves.
With pretty much no expectation of finding anything but a decent glass of Pinot at the Lodge on a Tuesday night, we were pleasantly surprised to wander in to the sound of Franks' guitar and harmonica filling the dimly-lit, sparesly populated room. There were only about fifteen people people there, all of them calm, chic, tanned, beautiful and pleasantly different from the screaming lunatics who patronize Surf Lodge on the weekends.
The set fit the low-key ambiance perfectly, and was comprised of a mix of original tunes from his album D.Franks and classic covers, like The Smiths' This Charming Man, and Sinatra's The Way You Look Tonight. At one point, Dustin even had a few of the couples in the crowd slow dancing. In catching up with the artist after the show, we found out that not only is he a talented musician, he also surfs. And gives lessons. A surfer-songwriter!
And as much as we'd like to fill this bachelor's inbox with love letters from all you Hamptons hotties who are undoubtedly intrigued, we'll let you bask in suspense, and instead encourage your presence at his awesome acoustic sets every Tuesday and Thursday at Surf Lodge. We'll see you there.
