The Production
Nierka combines music, video, puppetry, lighting and dance to make something multifaceted in every realm. Unbound by convention or genre, the production is deeply affecting and poignant in its unique, honest and inspiring deliverance of one man’s experience of life.
With music composed and performed by Austin TV and NSM PSM, and choreography by the Nederlands Dans Theater choreographer, Fernando Hernando Magadan, Nierka explores new ways of approaching theatre – using new technologies and more traditional concepts. Ideas from post modernism, avant-garde and expressionism merge with more modern trends to embrace the concept of a "painting in motion."
The autobiographical story takes the audience on a journey, following the protagonist through different stages of his life. Starting from conception, we witness his unconscious adherence to the cyclical nature of social conformities in the first act. In act two the conscious mind is violently awakened, bringing the character’s frenetic struggle with the realization of death and mortality to light. The final act is one of acceptance of life and acknowledgement of the natural world of which he is becoming one.
