In roller derby, you score points by helping a designated skater ("the Jammer") fully lap the other team, who are trying to physically block your Jammer from getting through. Therefore, the only way to clear a path is to hit, and hit hard. Basically, roller derby is what Quidditch would be if Harry Potter weren't a giant pussy.
