Once he made it into the NHL, initially as a member of the Detroit Red Wings, his harassing style quickly earned him the title of "Most Hated Player" in the League, from both fans and his peers. His constant stream of trash talk includes such highly questionable lines as mocking Toronto Maple Leafs player Jason Blake for revealing that he was suffering from Leukemia, allegedly calling a black player a "monkey," and dropping the C-bomb on a 58-year-old female fan and then squirting her with his water bottle.
And oh yeah, his antics during the '08 playoffs led to a full-on rule change, after Avery started using the not explicitly illegal but insanely douchey tactic of standing directly in front of the opposing team's goalie and waving his arms and yelling in order to distract him. Though the NHL closed the loophole the following year with the "Sean Avery Rule," having a corrective rule change named after your bad behavior is generally not a good sign for your reputation.
