Stand Up Paddleboarding
For outdoors lovers and those who prefer to workout amongst the elements rather than indoor studios, let us submit the exciting new exercise trend known as stand up paddleboarding (SUP). Performed atop your own personal paddle board, SUP exercises tone arms, legs and core on the open sea. If you're up for the challenge and want to try something new, head to the beach and take a stab at this exhilarating sport and perhaps spot some dolphins along the way. As far as where you can get in on SUP action, we recommend Malibu LongBoards Surf School, which offers SUP lessons in numerous local coastal spots, including Marina del Rey, Venice, Santa Monica, Malibu and Ventura (two-hour lesson with gear included costs $120). Venice Paddle Boards also offers two-hour lessons with gear included for $80. For those of you who have SUP experience, test your limits with SUP yoga, which usually includes a 20-minute warm up paddle, a series of traditional yoga poses atop the board, then a 20-minute cool down paddle. One local option is Poseidon's SUP Yoga with Alex Westmore by appointment only (SUP rental is $29 and the water yoga class is $19). Oh, and all of these places will either supply or let you rent a wetsuit, because the Pacific can be quite chilly--all the more incentive not to fall too many times!
