Other Details: Our favorite renaissance man/stoner awards show host James Franco added “curator” to his exhaustive (exhausting?) resume this weekend with the opening reception of “Rebel,” a multimedia show dedicated to Franco’s idol James Dean and his iconic role in
Rebel Without a Cause. The show contains works from big-time multimedia artists like Ed Ruscha, Terry Richardson and Harmony Korine including a recreation of the famous knife fight scene at the Griffith Observatory, starring Franco and a gang of BMX-riding girls directed by Korine. Paul and Damon McCarthy also built a full recreation of Bungalow 2 at the Chateau Marmont in order to shoot a conceptual piece where James Dean interacts with his character from the movie. If it all sounds pretty weird, that’s because it is, or as Franco put it, it’s “not about being loyal to [
Rebel Without A Cause] as much as it is using the film as a source for inspiration and building off that to create new work."
