The gift of music runs deep in jazz saxophonist Ravi Coltrane's blood as the son of pianist Alice Coltrane, who herself comes from a family of accomplished musicians, and legendary saxophonist and jazz pioneer John Coltrane. He also has a cousin you may have heard of who specializes in experimental electronic music he produces under the name Flying Lotus. Though Ravi, named after sitarist Ravi Shankar, was just a toddler too young to learn the art of the sax when his father passed away, he seems to have inherited his knack with the instrument. Since the '90s, Ravi has made his own successful solo career as a master of the saxophone having released several albums of contemporary jazz influenced by earlier antecedents of his father's generation.
