We have nothing against experimental bands that push the line towards performance art. The financial considerations of making a living as a musician tend to stifle truly broad creativity, so really, it's nice to see a group like Hecuba that goes for it flat-out, making no excuses for their complete disregard for the tropes of standard songwriting. What's really impressive, however, is how the songs themselves, despite being far from traditionally structured, completely captivate the imagination. Reviewers have described it as "sci-fi inspired Greek tragedy," "a mood masterclass," and more simply, "songs [that] twist and turn and fuck with your head." Throw on top of all of that the concept of their latest album, Modern, which the duo of Jon Beasley and Isabelle Albuquerque recorded by shaving off all their body hair and locking themselves in their recording studio "as twins," with the intention of essentially becoming one human being and bypassing the back-and-forth of normal creative interaction. If it sounds weird, that's because it is, but the result is trippy, disturbing, and expirimental, but also a lot more easy to take in than you might think.
