Tinariwen

Where: El Rey Why: Quite possibly the most interesting act in the 3-day, French-themed "Ooh La L.A. Festival" taking place at the El Rey, Tinariwen is probably the only band playing whose music was the actual soundtrack to a modern armed conflict (in this case, the Tuareg Rebellion). Since laying down their weapons, their guitar-driven but traditionally-based music has reached around the world, leading to gigs at Coachella and Glastonbury, praise from Thom Yorke and Robert Plant, and collaborations with members of Wilco and TV On The Radio. Your ticket will also get you a set from Moroccan/French jazz-soul-folk songstress Hindi Zahra, who took home the 'Best World Album' award at this year's Victoires de la Musique (the French Grammys).
