Slide #1
"El Rey" means "the king" in español and the venue stayed true to its namesake, hosting a royally insane show last night. L.A.'s wild ones joined forces as an equally unleashed audience to match the crazed performance of the headlining band, The Black Lips. Closing out the night, these Georgia natives took southern hospitality to a strange level with their always entertaining and somewhat demented, provocative theatrics. The Black Lips guitarist Cole Alexander got the crowd into a moshing toilet paper party frenzy with his wild antics which included spitting at the photographers (we hope ours made it out dry) and hocking loogies into the air before catching them in his mouth. Foulness.
Oh, and shout out to the girl in a No Age t-shirt who bombed the stage in a thong with “Black Lips” written across her ass. We didn't think things like that happened these days with all of those barricades and security, but more power to this chick for getting her rock 'n' roll moment in the sun.
Obviously, The Black Lips stole the spotlight for this show, but the opening bands gave the crowd some good vibes and tunes to get the rowdy party started. Psychedelic garage band Night Beats, hailing from Seattle, Washington played to the packed house, and local surf pop-meets-skate punk band Beach Party brought their lo-fi clamor to the debaucherous crowd.
