Slide #4
Following the successes of Anna B. Scott and Elgart's initial renditions of FlyAway Home at the Van Nuys FlyAway last year, L.A.'s powers that be commissioned three encore performances, two of which Elgart presented Saturday and Sunday night at the previous location. Under her direction, a team of acrobatic dancers began their performance by first portraying regular travelers acting out the sorts of behavior the terminal typically sees before transitioning to the modern dance choreography. Using helium-filled balloons in the shape of doves taking flight and stretching long sheets of vibrant fabric, the dancers moved gracefully through the space, both inside and out, for the hour-long piece. Through a choreographed expression of travel, the performers made use of the terminal's scale and architecture to convey themes of flight, light and gravity complemented by original music by ambient artist Feltlike, projections by Stephen Glassman, and costumes by Swinda Reichelt.
FlyAway Home's encore performances were once again a success with audiences and though they've concluded their run, that doesn't mean they won't be back for more. But until then, keep clicking through the slideshow to see our photos from Elgart's Saturday night production.
