Happenings: New York, 1958-1963
Nearly 360 photographs by Robert McElroy record a series of historical events in the art world known as "Happenings," a movement of performance pieces begun in an East Village gallery by Allan Kaprow. No one is exactly sure what happened at these Happenings, but McElroy took a lot of photographic evidence, including performances by Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine, Robert Whitman and Red Grooms, which demonstrate a revolution in the breaking of boundaries between art and life. Scratch your head, and get ready for some phenomenal historical scenes, as well as a display of artwork and props left over from this brief, vital period. Opening Reception Friday, February 9 at Pace, 534 West 25th Street. For more information, go HERE. [Photo via]
