Things tend to move slower in the South, but are they really so slow that their mindset are stuck in the 1800s? Boasting one of the largest Greek populations in the country, of the 8,600 girls who belonged to sororities at U of A in 2014, only two black girls were initiated into sororities. Sorority girls were interviewed by Marie Claire, and they said they never saw black girls make it past the first round during rush week. Even worse, these interviewees were complicit in this overt racism. They were instructed by their sisters not to give black girls bids because it would be bad for the chapter's reputation. A year after Marie Claire's exposé, one sorority at Bama released a bid video that went viral because they didn't feature a single girl of color.
