In 2014, Emma Sulkowicz shone a light on campus rape with her fearless project at Columbia. That same year, Rolling Stone published a campus rape story that had unfortunately blundered. In the minds of most Americans, do you think that headlines and media coverage such as these help to legitimize or delegitimize the reality of the problem?

The media is extremely important—they’ve consistently pushed the issue , for better or worse. They’ve kept the topic hot, kept the public talking about it, kept bosses and universities paying attention. But most of the coverage to date has been very narrow (e.g., a particular case at a single school), or has been outright wrong (as you mention, the now-infamous Rolling Stone piece). Magazine or newspaper stories are too short to convey the whole picture, and they often focus on unrepresentative cases, like those involving star athletes or teams. And too often than not, this coverage is sensationalist and not representative of the national situation as a whole.
