Who would have thought the audience would tear up for Selena's acceptance speech? The pop-star may get everything she wants now, but growing up in Texas, it wasn't always that way. She was raised by her single mother, who gave birth to Selena at age 16. Her mother worked 3 jobs and lived paycheck to paycheck. Now, the 20-year-old has built an empire with her own fashion line for Kmart, successful movie career, and a number of double platinum songs.
But we learned last night that her most impressive achievement is one off screen. She is currently the youngest-ever U.S. ambassador for UNICEF. She is taking the time to give back, and as Caryl M. Stern, CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF said, she is the Katherine Hepburn of our time.
