Last night Robert Redford screened his latest directorial effort "The Conspirator" at MoMa. James McAvoy, Robin Wright, Evan Rachel Wood, Kevin Kline, Tom Wilkinson, other members of the cast and celebrity supporters came out to watch. After, guests hit the after party sponsored by Piaget and the Wall Street Journal at the Royalton.
The film is based on the untold, true story of Mary Surratt, who was (spoiler alert) hanged for allegedly being part of the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. The script focuses heavily on courtroom drama which was taken directly from transcripts of the actual trial. It's interesting, it's shot nicely, the actors all give strong performances, but unless you are the sort of history buff interested in every single detail, chances are you might feel that the film drags, despite all the parallells it has with politics today. Add in the fact that no one involved in the film feels it's important that the end be kept secret, the last 18 minutes are spent wondering when they are going to slam the death penalty on her.
