When it comes to New York's annual secret dinner party, not even Tropical Storm Barry could rain on our parade - though he could cut it a bit short.

Last night, more than 5,000 people dressed in white descended upon Nelson Rockefeller Park in Battery Park for the flashmob-style event along the waterfront. Once arrived at the secret location, which wasn't revealed to attendees until they quite literally got there, guests set up their own tables and chairs, along with some special place setting extras like string lights and candles, in order to kick off Diner en Blanc 2019.

While clouds hovered above, and rain would eventually have everyone running for cover, we did manage to get in a bit of fun before the storm hit. And, dare we say, the downpour made it even more magical.

After the signature napkin twirl signifying the start of the soiree, diners enjoyed some live music and time to take in the incredible view of thousands gathered en blanc. Just before the sky opened up, a fire boat floated by, releasing a stream of water canons. But one of the most memorable moments of the night came when Broadway stars Sydney James Harcourt, Kenita Miller, and Desi Oakley came together for a rendition of "New York, New York," just as the rain started coming down. In the grass before the stage, a crowd gathered to kick up their feet and dance to the iconic tune while getting drenched. 'Twas a New York moment if we've ever seen one.

Though the bash is typically rain or shine, and revelers are advised to bring umbrellas and ponchos, the weather was severe enough to shut down the festivities. But even in the midst of thousands packing up their bags and running through the streets of Battery Park City, the rain just seemed to add another layer of the unexpectedness at the heart of the party. And it made for some pretty epic photos.
