Last evening, Penguin and Rolling Stone celebrated the release of war reporter Michael Hastings’ new book, The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan. Broadway stars Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater, CNN's John Avlon, Columbine author Dave Cullen, Vanity Fair's Chris Rovzar, Penguin's David Rosenthal, and Stone Executive Editor Eric Bates were among the arts and media luminaries that packed the back room of The Half King, as the witty and oft-irreverent Hastings quipped with attending family and friends and read passages from his book, already a New York Times Best Seller.

The Operators is an extension of Mr. Hasting’s 2010 Rolling Stones article “The Runaway General,” the game-changing exposé of US army General Stanley McChrystal that sent waves through the White House and caused President Obama to relieve the General of his command. Afterwards, guests toasted Mr. Hastings’ well-earned rise and the General’s deserved fall at Norwood, a private club for the creative arts elite.
