Sanchez Kane
Barbara Sanchez-Kane is one of the few designers not taking the commercial route early in her career. She was, after all, offended when someone told her to make T-shirts - because that's what designers need to do to survive. Easy, commercial pieces are what the masses want and it would be a shame to deprive them of a basic tee. But when everyone is doing the same thing, isn't it more fun to turn around and go a different direction?
Sanchez-Kane did exactly that, blending her Mexican culture with American streetwear and a touch of avant-garde. She took from her own culture instead of researching and throwing herself into new ones. Her inspiration most likely came from our very own White House. When people are trying to bring your culture and people down, you tend to stick together. People get a little bit more nationalistic, more proud. As they should, because it's history and culture we are defending here. If you don't think politics belongs in fashion, too bad. Everyone needs to speak up, somehow, someway.
Spring for Sanchez-Kane was about men getting in touch with their feelings and realizing that being a "man" means being true to yourself and brave enough to cry. Other parts of the collection drew from themes like immigration and drug smuggling. Will fall's collection have a political undertone? We will bet on that.
