What is the difference between drawing different bands?
The marks are different. It’s an obvious viewpoint. You look at them separately, and you can tell there’s different energy going on. I have the original drawing of Dinosaur Jr. that has a line that goes straight through it, from one end horizontally to the other. People asked why I drew it, and say it looks like a mistake, like the only line that could've gone wrong. And I say it’s a direct reaction to J’s amp squealing by mistake. He was standing in front of a wall, and he hit a switch. I swear to god, his gray hair came out of that show, and I stepped back, and it was so loud, it forced my arm. I literally threw the charcoal across the page. It was a moment where you really got a human reaction. Every work has a story to it, but that one in particular is interesting because of that mark. But that’s how jay played, on 11, every amp, so you deal with the consequences of hearing something that loud. It was at Central Park Summerstage, and I think I lost hair or something. The whole thing was a complete mind melt.
