How has the fashion industry evolved since you first came on the scene?
Well, I think that fashion has changed because of the gentrification of everything. When I was coming up, in the East Village there were storefronts that kids were living in and sewing things and selling them. You can’t really do that anymore and you have to have money to survive. I think it’s super difficult to design and to succeed in fashion design now. I look at my friends who are so talented and brilliant and they're having a show at the Jewish Museum, so they’re kind of being supported more by the art world. I think that it’s super difficult to do anything that’s very innovative in America ‘cause it’s tough to get the support.
Though I feel like in fashion, there’s still so much inspiration. It’s not less inspiring or anything like that. I think there’s a ton of great designers. For me, in fashion, I really respect and love innovation, I love great design. I love amazing craft and I love wild ideas. Not all together, but I think fashion isn’t one thing. There are people like threeASFOUR, people who are super innovative, there are small people who are super amazing, and then there are people like Phoebe Philo for Céline, I think she’s amazingly talented. I love Raf Simons. But I love Marc Jacobs. I like what Michael Kors does. I just like his taste. I don’t just like one thing.
