What's your best tip for someone who wants to grow their own produce in NYC?

Start small and grow plants that are appropriate for your space. You can use a shallow tray with a few inches of dirt and grow microgreens or pea shoots that will mature within a week. You don't need tons of space to grow herbs and lettuces successfully. People are easily discouraged from gardening all together if their first tomatoes don't fruit, or their plants are not productive, but what they don't realize is that you need a lot of sun for fruiting plants. In my home garden, I focus on greens and herbs because they can thrive with only a half day of full sun. That said, I always have one or two sad tomato plants that I fuss over every summer, I can't help it.
