I ended up at boarding school in Connecticut and then went on to university in Scotland to study History of Art. In Scotland, when I should have been writing my dissertation on Giacometti and the Bohemians of Post War Paris, I bought a sewing machine and taught my self to sew. I just wasn't finding clothes I wanted to wear and my archive of my grandmother's vintage Pucci was becoming threadbare! I knew I wanted to make and wear clothes that expressed how I felt - and I was totally inspired by the artists I was studying who were so expressive in the way that they dressed and created and lived. So, it was for very selfish reasons that I started to make clothes. I just didn't want to look like everybody else. And making clothes felt practical - I love to draw and paint, but you can't wear your canvas out of your studio!
