Could you further explain your inspirations and why you use women as your subjects?
MR: All of my inspiration comes from the films, mostly from the '50s and '60s and '70s and the celebration of women. Women of that time period were glorious and amazing. My work is definitely a major celebration of femininity, women, sensual and sexy... [they're] also really happy but [have] something else cooking underneath. It’s not just a pretty face in my images.
Rothen points out that her images go from domestic violence to freedom in her book. With Domestic Violence month coming up, it seems this book came out just in time to take part in the celebration of women and their need to be free.
“To me a strong woman is not only strong, she is able to be feminine at the same time,” Rothen says.
