Interview: Miss Lily's Resident DJ Max Glazer On The Shop's One-Year Anniversary
Congrats on Miss Lily's one year anniversary - how are you and the rest of the Miss Lily's crew celebrating?
Thanks! We basically celebrate 24/7 by spending our days with great music, food and juice. Specifically for the one year anniversary of Miss Lily's Variety, Cafe and Melvin's Juice Box, we invited all of our friends down for a special, live, in-store performance from Tarrus Riley (who is featured on Family Style) and the legendary Johnny Osbourne. The walls were covered with candid photos of the familiar faces who have passed through during the first year and a retrospective of the artwork and posters created for the past year's worth of special events.
Of course, the Miss Lily's Family Style album is big way to ring in a new year. When did you all decide to pursue this project?
Family Style was something that we began to discuss and plan well before Miss Lily's Variety even opened. The restaurant had been open from the previous year, and as the variety store, cafe and Radio Lily were coming together, it was clear that we had a great opportunity to present an album of the music that we all love and is such an integral part of Miss Lily's. Even though the initial idea had been around for a while, the timing couldn't be better to have our first music release available as we celebrate our first year.
How were the tracks selected for the album?
We really wanted to give people a musical taste of what it's like to spend an evening at Miss Lily's. There was a lot of brainstorming among myself, Matt Goias, Serge Becker and Paul Salmon to get the right combination of our favorite tunes on there. One of the most important things when it came to the track selection was to include many of the people we consider a part of our family at Miss Lily's. Mr. Vegas, Konshens, Tarrus Riley and Romain Virgo are among the artists featured on the album that have spent time with us on Radio Lily, shooting videos, hosting album release parties and dining at Miss Lily's. The arrangement is meant to take you from early evening to prime time, and then wind things down to give you the arc of a "family style" night at Miss Lily's.
