So why shoes? What differentiates a shoe from a shirt, or a bag?
It’s just something that we love. Something that we are passionate about. I think that there’s a lot of competition out there in clothing. There are tons of design schools that are pumping out clothing designers by the thousands, and I think that there are fewer contemporary shoe designers out there. Fewer women contemporary shoe designers.
It’s a funny thing, because when we got into this business, we realized it was heavily run by men. You have your Steve Maddens, your Jeffrey Campbells, your Stuart Wetizmans - all men. And I think that a lot of women didn’t realize that you didn’t have to be this old school shoe dog inheriting it from your family to start this business. That, with the right connections in terms of knowing people in the production world, you could design things that you loved.
Barri and I didn’t go to school for shoe design. We learned designed by osmosis, but we’re not technical people - we don’t make the shoes. We design them and we send them to our factory, which handles all of the technical stuff.
So I think that a lot of people don’t realize that it’s a lot easier than they might think to design shoes.
